This birthday gift from August 2024 was drunk in October of that year.
L: The beer is a slightly hazy, caramel yellow in the glass, with a thin film of bright-white head. A small amount of carbonation winds lazily upwards in the middle of the beer.
S: The nose is toffee and piney darkness. This one is not for the modern fruit box IPA lover.
T: This one is all bitter grapefruit peel and pine with hints of orange and mandarin right at the edge of the swallow. A big caramel base lurks under the hops, admirably setting the stage for the piney darkness to come.
M: Carbonation is low, but the beer kicks on the swallow. Mouthfeel is otherwise smooth and full.
O: The 2010s called, and they want their IPA back. The market for this one will be much less than before NEIPAs were a thing, but if you want an Australian IPA that puts hairs on your chest, this is your mark.
Cheers!

Heard great things about this and bought from a reputable bottle shop. Or did I?
a sign of Not a Good Beer is a smell of last weeks unwashed sports socks when the lid is opened. And a metal smell. Go figure
Apart from that is a bit stone-fruit, a bit hoppy, and a bit stale really.
hmmm

These guys (girls) definitely have a fixation on IPA’s as they only brew one beer: An IPA. It’s all in the name they say; Fixation IPA. So what is this fixation that I am fixating on this evening? A West Coast style IPA, from that i.e.est of the i.e.’s the United That Is States of America - the UTISA. I’ll be honest with you dear reader, I am reaching a state of ad nauseam with West Coast style IPA’s, it’s just a combination of BBF [Big Beer Fatigue], a hot summer, and a double scoop of “too many West Coast style IPA’s” with choc chips. I will try not to let this bias my review, but FFS can’t we start brewing more East Coast style IPA’s in Australia already!!! [rant complete, you may continue with your regularly scheduled beer review]
Poured from a 330ml bottle into a nonic pint.
A: Hazed amber body with a chalky off-white head that appears fairly dense and doesn’t fade. There is some nice lace being left on the side of the glass, and overall it all looks rather tasty - a solid 8 for looks IMO. 8/10.
S: Piney/citrus perform a wet hop slap across my olfactory senses. I guess if there’s one good thing about Aussie versions of the West Coast style IPA’s it is that they’re fresher than their American cousins by virtue of not being on a ship for 2 months. The piney/citrus note gives way to a solid caramel/biscuit base and you can tell from the aroma that the balance is pretty spot on. 8/10.
T: As above: Piney/citrus hops, a slight earthiness, hints of caramel, larger hints of biscuit, and a dry cracker note in the centre that lends itself well to this overall balanced flavour. Finishes with a mid to light piney hop character. My only critique - it just needs a touch more gusto from both hops/malt. It’s got a good flavour balance but it’s no Pirate Life IPA (which is simply exceptional flavour-wise and hard to beat). 7/10.
M: Mid to light, almost medium bodied, with a nice dense carbonation, nice! 8/10.
D: The overall sense you get from drinking Fixation is that it isn’t quite entry-level craft beer, but it’s not out-and-out ballsy like… again I’m going to reference Pirate Life IPA because that is currently my benchmark for an Aussie IPA: Pirate Life IPA. It kind of sits in this rather nebulous territory where it might become a stop along the route to ballsier [not a word, ring Collier’s] brews for budding craft aficionados. Don’t get me wrong though: This is good IPA - I’ve just been in this game for too long now [I need a parrot on my shoulder and a wooden leg]. 7/10.
Food match: This brew made me think of curry… a good sign for an IPA!

I tried the Fixation IPA at the Pink Moon Saloon. It poured a hazy golden with white head that left a decent lace. The scent was a beautiful bouquet of citrus and pine. The taste was nicely balanced and you knew you're drinking an IPA. The was nice pine resin base with citrus notes. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall this is one of the best beers I have had in Australia. I would like to try their DIPA at some point. Well done!
