Thick and consistent beer. Lots of muddy citrus tones with heaps of malts. Thick and fairly thorough, though it seems to fall off a bit on the end of the flavor ride. Not too shabby a beer. Though at 11.5%, I think we're in triple IPA territory; though that is more semantics than anything really.

On tap at Magnolia during February's strong beer month

Amber body with small head with no retention.

Nose is very floral with malty and rather cheesy smell, with some grassy and vegetal notes.

Taste is pretty malty, sweet upfront, with moderate strength grapefruit hops mid-palate, ending with a slightly bitter finish.

Body is light and carbonation is mildly fizzy, giving this a rather flat mouthfeel

As an imperial IPA, it delivers a little punch but is disappointing. It has the alcohol presence at 10.5%, but is not very well integrated. Plus, I can't drink a flat IPA.

A- Pours a golden color with a nice, off white head.

S- Lots of citrus, light fruit.

T- Deep bitterness, lots of citrus, resiney, sticky, a bit of aspirin.

M- Thick with medium carbonation.

D- Not a bad beer and I have to go against the majority on this one. Although the flavors didn't quite work together as much as I would have liked, I enjoyed this one.

On tap at the 2010 Hayward Bistro DIPA Festival. HUGE IBU's at 140!

Hazy straw colored ale with nice lacing. The aroma could do better. Wet dog smelling on the initial whiff. Has the characteristics of a German Pilsner which is odd for an Imperial IPA. Bitter initial taste with grapefruit smacking me in the face but that bitterness is followed by a sweet swallow and aftertaste. At 9% this went down smoothly with multiples easily drunk even with the high IBU's.

I was a little disappointed by Magnolia's attempt for the festival as I like many of their beers. This just wasn't one of them.

From the hand pump at the pub during Strong Ale Month 2007.

Very thick, deep amber color - minimal head. Nose is certainly hoppy, but not fresh and clean - thick, almost cloying. Taste continues the trend - tons of hops, tons of malt, but not integrating well. Like the bitterness and sweetness are from different beers simultaneously. The unpleasantness is compounded by the viscous mouthfeel (perhaps compounded even more by getting it from cask), for a syrupy, almost lugubrious feel.

Magnolia is a great place, and several of their beers are world class. But the Promised Land is worth a pass.

Copper. Thin off-white head that quickly reduces to a very thin head with small amount of sticky lacing. Strongly herbal hop aroma with... uh-oh, a noticeable medicinal smell, like Pepto-Bismol. Huge teeth-shattering sticky sweetness followed closely by an out-of-control bitter herbal hoppiness, reminiscent of aspirin-like bitterness. Some citrus-oragne rind is present, but overall this is toow sweet to start, too bitter to end, and the flavors never meld. Alas, a stinker from one of my favorite brewpubs. It happens.
