This is a German style hefeweizen. A special yeast gives this wheat beer a distinct flavor of cloves and bananas.

On tap @ The Alchemist (Waterbury, VT) on 7/15/11. Served in a pint glass. ABV is listed as 6.2%.

Pours an unfiltered gold, topped with a finger of rich bright-white head. This retains with a nice looking frothiness, leaving back thick swathes of foamy lace down the sides of the glass. The aroma is lightly grassy feeling on the edges, before giving way to a THICK mix of banana, lemon, and s crisp twang of wheat. Zippy feeling spice gives this quite a festive feel in the nose. Man, this is one full flavored Hefe nose!

This carries over to the taste, with a flavorful and refreshing combo of ripe banana and wheat flavors. This gives way to more of a green, and unripened banana bitterness before that spice kicks into the backend of the profile, leaving the finish quite lively feeling. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a sprightly feel to the carbonation that causes all of those delicious flavors to literally dance around in the mouth. This was just so smooth and quaffable feeling. Excellent!

Wow, this was definitely one of the top American takes on the style that I’ve had. There was just a ton of refreshing flavor to this that kept this interesting and easy to drink the whole way through. With all of the attention on the Belgian and American IPA styles here, it’s sometimes easy to forget just how good the German beers can be here as well. This was a BIG reminder! Delicious!

This is an exceptional facsimilie of the style. Tasty. Aroma was dead on. Cloves, Banana, Spices. Taste was soft wheat . Lemony, Spicy, Fruity and oh so very summery and refreshing. I ordered this for my wife and she loved it. She normally does not drink beer but will taste what I order for her. She finished every drop. I felt this was as good as any American Hefe and many German Hefe that I have tried.

On tap at The Alchemist...
Appears a cloudy light gold with a small white head and little lacing.
Smell is of huge bananas, vanilla, and subtle cloves with a nice blend of wheat.
Taste is authentic German with a great blend that is rich and smooth. Outside of Germany, good luck finding an American brewed Hefe that tastes like this.
Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a sweet balance of vanilla and sugar with light clove that is perfect.
Drinkability...uhhh, friggin great!
