On tap @ The Alchemist (Waterbury, VT) on 2/18/11. Served in a footed Pils glass. Looks like this one is back out of retirement.

Pours a hazed coppery gold, topped with a stiff finger of bright-white head. This retains with a ΒΌ finger creamy froth that has a rich flare-up to it and a leaves a good bit of rich sticky lacing behind. The aroma smells freshly floral, spicy, and leafy, with some bright citrusy hops, as ripe tropical fruit notes meld with a sturdy malty wave of sugars and bread across the back of the nose.

The taste has some aggressive bitterness going on with it, as bitter grapefruit, rind, and pine give this some bite while a softer leafy presence and tropical fruitiness (including a good bit of zesty lemon) add some fresh but more subdued hop flavors to the profile. Those fruits work well with the sweet sugary grains of the malt backbone here but this IPA is all about the hops, as this finishes with a spicy, resinous, and pithy ending that hangs HARD on the palate. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a firm sharp feel that accentuates all of that bitterness. Luckily there is some silky smoothness underneath that adds some needed ease to the body. The alcohol is mostly held in check here for a 7% IPA but the light warmth that is present does combine with all of that strong bitterness to wear down the palate a tad too much at times.

Those that like their IPA with a palate crushing bitterness will probably enjoy this one, as those hops really started to come out to play BIG TIME as this warmed up. I was personally looking for a bit more a deft touch to this, as that combo of ABV and bitterness just got to be a bit too much to say that this stayed totally drinkable the whole way through. I'm glad that I got to try this but I was ready to move on after a glass of this guy.

This beer seems to be quite popular. Pours a golden color with a strong and hoppy aroma. I detected Cascade hops with a citrusy nose. At 100 IBUs, there was quite a bit of hoppiness followed by some hints of grassiness with a dry mouthfeel.

Asked the bartender if it was a DIPA and he said no. However, it certainly is strong enough to qualify as such and I personally compare it against traditional DIPAs as there are very few IPAs around here that come close to 120IBUs, let alone 100IBUs.

Well done effort and I would definitely have another.
