Served from the can in a Lagunitas mason jar.
Pours a deep midnight hickory topped by a finger of sienna foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, burnt sourdough, a few flicks of ash, and a twinge of walnut. The taste holds notes of harsh roast, sharp pine, and baker's chocolate (you know, those bars you found in the grocery store that one time and bought because you like dark chocolate and this one said it had 90% cacao and then later regretted your life choices upon the first bite from the bar), everything tending toward a strident, stringent bitterness in the finish. The body is a hefty-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a smooth feel. I dig the Dostoevsky reference and everything, but this stout just did not sit right with me, unfortunately.
