Pours a very dark ruby color. The head is a finger high and khaki in shade. Retention is pretty bad, fizzling out in little time. Of course no lacing is left behind on the glass.

The aroma is timid, yet off. Cinnamon is fairly evident, as are whiffs of cocoa. What also dominates is are some notes of licorice and a strange bitterness. The base comes across like an old-school RIS instead of a big, chocolaty American IS - and it doesn't work with the additions. Meh.

Yeah, it follows the aroma closely. Some notes of roasted malt, licorice, and hoppy bitterness open it up. The additions show up near the middle and end: cinnamon, chocolate, and vanilla mainly. The robustly hopped, old-school RIS base clashes harshly with the cinnamon flavors, and the chili flavors are nonexistent. All in all, this should have been good, and it just isn't. Pity.

This is fairly easy drinking, to be fair. It's also tragically limp and flimsy on the palate. Carbonation seems low - normally good, but it also serves to enhance said limp, flimsy nature. It just doesn't have the texture I want from an imperial stout.

I can drink this. I can finish this. But man, I wish I was drinking something else right now. It's hard to screw up a Mexican hot chocolate stout, but by God Black Flag did just that. It's also around $14 for a 4 pack of tallboy cans. Even if you really like this particular sub-style, avoid this one.

Not entirely sure how to categorize this, but since the brewery didn't, they gotta deal with how I did.
Pours really dark brown, almost black, bit of reddish highlights in the light. Quick bit of tan head, shit retention, no lacing.
Smells vaguely chocolaty, with hints of spice
Dark chocolate all the way on taste. Nice cinnamon and chili flavor on the finish
Heavy mouthfeel, very low carbonation. Feels flat, not in the sense that it's not carbonated, just kinda "blah"
Really wanted to like this one, but mostly just Meh
