With only 18 Wee Heavies under my belt (yuk), I'm not certain I should be too critical of rating Wobbly against its stylistic peers. But of the nine I've drunk on the first page of the most rated Wees, I doubt Wobbly beats any of them... if my memory serves me well over the last six years. Nonetheless, Wobbly is worth having.
For starters, I like its Looks; a brown with just enough red so the brown is not dull... but notions of foam would be nice to have around past the pour. Smells are slightly above average, but its raisins and dark fruit need more complexing from a trained yeast. At 40 IBU, there is a tang in the finish. As a malt-head, my tendency is to think "Why not use the 9 ABV to your advantage and err on the side of being sweet?" But this is an American micro's interpretation of the Wee Heavy; and 40 IBU is what we get.
My second from Silver Harbor, the first was three years ago... so it is nice to see their progress. On their website, I see that they have an even more sophisticated menu of bar food. They describe their brews well also.. but they are a gathering place for the tourist trade in the northern section of the south-eastern part of Lake Michigan. I usually go through St. Joseph's without stopping, but next time I hope to time it for lunch at Silver Harbor.
For the record, Wobbly was added to UnTappd in March 2016 and has 782 ratings which average 7.76... only slightly above mine.
