a tasty and sturdy american brown ale, a little more body and strength than a lot of these have, but its not overly sweet or anything, and ended up being a real enjoyable pint for a rainy evening on the coast. its deep brown in color, chocolate toned and frothy headed from the tap, some low gloss to it, average head a medium tan color. the nose here is a little rich and long boiled up front, but there is a nice low end too, subtle smoke and char even, coffee, and molasses, very nice malt layers. simple on the yeast side, minimal on the hops, a rather basic brew but with enough nuance and fortitude to stand out. the flavor hints at raisin and tobacco up front, baking chocolate and cocoa powder in the middle, and a little roasty bitterness and a finishing maple note late. this is smooth in body, not quite heavy to me but fuller and longer than a lot of these are, and not due to any lack of refinement. i like the way this lingers on the palate a bit, drinks very autumnal to me, and kind of teases the coming cooler weather. nice brown ale, bold for the style, not over engineered, and quite well executed on the whole. this place is a great hang! cool beer menu and ambitious food, one of our favorites on this stretch of coast so far!
