this was actually one of the better beers in here, generally speaking, and as much as red beers dont usually turn me on much, this one is well constructed and flavorful, the irish ale yeast makes a difference, a more complex and complete beer than is normal for an amber type, and we appreciated it in this beer. after a hike we were really thirsty, and i was wary of a red that might be a little sweet, but this is nice and earthy and dry, yet still almost entirely malt driven and rather flavorful. i get a kilned malt element, an almost scorched rather than caramelized complexion, nutty like toasted almonds or even cashews, and with a cool crackery doughy sort of earthy old world irish ale yeast, fermented warm enough to let it impart some flavor. its dry at the end though, layered and bready, and has almost no hops at all, even where some balancing would be appropriate. mild beer overall though, nothing too dramatic about it, but a pretty solid interpretation of an old school styles. all of the beers in here were better than average to say the very least...
