A:
Pours a clearish ruddy copper with a big, thick cream-clot of beige head that lazily settles to a decent film. Lots of lacing, okay retention. (4)
S:
Woodsy fruits and some malt body. Pine, old washcloth, some light fruitiness, spicy hops, too-caramelized caramel. (3.5)
T:
Woody hops and a stiff malt center. Bitter pine, caramel-licorice malt, some bracing pesudo-medicinal bitterness covers all else, dirty washcloth. (3.25)
M:
Medium bodied, medium carbonation, very well-hidden alcohol, lingering bitter aftertaste. (3.75)
O:
Pretty all right IPA, I guess, but nothing crazy-good. There is a nagging off-flavor (at least to me) that I have never been sure of what this is when I get it, but it is definitely either my perception of oxidation, cleanliness issues or stale ingredients. What is strange is that it is fresh. But I digress.
It is is a malty, woodsy, spicy west coast-style IPA that is extremely strong for how smooth it is and how easy it drinks. But it seemed a little off-kilter to me, big where it shouldn't be, weak where it should be strong. Anyway, it was definitely not a drainpour, but is far from as amazing as I had been repeatedly and emphatically led to believe it was.
Is it hoppy? Yes. Is it better than the worst IPAs you'll sometimes find kicking around? Yes. Is it good or worthing tracking down? I don't think so. At least not yet. It doesn't seem poorly made or anything, there is potential there but I will probably wait till they get a little bigger to try this one again, see if that does it any favors. (3.25)
