Handsome dark amber with ample suds in the Maredsous goblet. This is brewed with quite a mix of malts, and in keeping with the English theme the hops are Cluster and East Kent Goldings. But the ringer ingredient is bark from the madrone tree. The total effect is fruity and malty but weirdly earthy.
The aroma is a little odd, too, with something like nutmeg and dirt. Taste is, well, woody for lack of a better word. There is some bitterness, not all hops, seems to me. Some astringency in the aftertaste. Very interesting stuff but it gets a little much after awhile. From the 16 oz crowler filled at the Bastion tasting room.
