So this was one of those beers I tried out of an almost morbid curiosity at the Bistro's barrel aged festival 2018. I mean, 10% saison? WTF? I gotta check this train wreck out I thought.
Pours a golden color with a moderate amount of haze to it, 1/4" white head. Looks innocent enough and not all that different from a 6% saison. The aroma was a little different, you could pull that alcohol out of it, and there was a big, almost massive white wine barrel presence along with it. Powerful sledgehammer like stuff going on.
Taste was just all over the place somewhat as expected. Caramel, a yeast and alcohol presence that has as much in common with a saison as it does a tripel. Bitterness is higher than the claimed 32 ibu in the mouth feel. Its kind of dry, but the caramel and butterscotch (mild) doesn't fit the notion of dry so well.
Much like those berliner weisse esque beers that get up to 6-8% abv, this is such a trip off the beaten path, it doesn't work. But I will say it wasn't quite the deplorable trainwreck I thought it was going to be, and dare I say I could see how some minor variation would make this a lot better.
