Spicy, citrus-forward hops from the U.S. are layered over a unique blend of roasted malts to produce a powerful boot-polish black ale. Smooth flavors of mocha coffee, dark fruit and toffee are balanced by notes of citrus, pine and mint.

Tasty beer poured from a 12oz bottle. Ruby red influenced, black body with tan head and moderately heavy lacing. Smell is of dark fruit, dark, chocolate malt and piney hops. Taste is very well balanced with dark roasted malt and piney hops, with a end touch of citrus. Dark chocolate coating on mouth feel. This is a beer from an experienced brewer who can dial in aspects of smell and taste to meet a brewing goal. Well done for type.

From the brewery in a flight. Pours a dark ruby with a tan head. Smells of roasty malts and piney hops in equal amounts. Taste follows the smell, with the hops being a bit stronger and leaving a bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel is somewhat carbonated and quite dry. Complex but easily drinkable, nicely done.

Very nice brown-to-black color with a creamy grey-ish head of 1/2 finger.
Aroma of fresh pine and tree, some dank hops, and roast notes.
Flavor is actually very very good. It starts with a resiny bitterness which leads into pine, citrus, ground coffee and finally roast coffee. The contrast between pine and rich coffee is pretty awesome.
Feel is both resiny and carbonated at the same time. A nice mixture that pairs well with the whole beer overall.
Between the piney/herbal nose and the roast coffee flavors, this beer hits every point and accomplishes a smooth, creamy black IPA. I like it a lot.

Good brew. Smell of pine and citrus. Mouthfeel is ok a tad light..crisp clean aftertaste. At 6.8 percent o could easily drink a 6 pack of these in a session. Would buy and recommend. Probably really good on tap

Look: While pouring, India Style Black Ale pours a mid brown, but darkens up slightly in the glass. Dark brown, the beer shows some lighter hues on the edges, and almost some translucency. A finger of off white head emerges from my tulip, and quickly recedes, leaving nothing but a film.
Smell: In true Summit fashion, the beer isn't overly hoppy, and seems pretty balanced. I get some roasted malt character, slight hop presence, and more of that malt o meal quality. Stirring reveals more of the previous olfactory notes, with a slightly hoppier note.
Taste: The taste follows the nose largely, but the hop presence is slightly more pronounced. Malt o meal qualities hit me first, followed by some piney hops
Feel: The beer is medium bodied, and shows some sharpness to it. While not west coast IPA bitter, there's an edge to this beer.
Overall: Black IPA isn't a style I particularly look for, but this is a pretty typical example of the style. Not exceeding in hops or malt, balanced, but it leaves me desiring more.

Very dark brown color with a finger of head. Heavy lacing is left down the glass. Aroma of grain, a bit of chocolate and roast, and some pine resin and earth. Fulfills my personal requirements of a black IPA in taste. I can taste the black with its chocolate and roast notes. The hops are more bitter than flavorful but there is some pine, earth, and herbal flavors. Nice body and carbonation which is customary for Summit. This beer is growing on me. Was not thrilled with the first bottle, but a different night and the 2nd and 3rd are much more pleasing.

Very dark with a tall tan bubbly, creamy-looking head, receding slowly leaving thick strings of lacing. Aroma is citrus, roasty, with some dark fruits coming through as well. Despite the dark color, the aroma is light and IPA-like except for the roasted malts. The feel is smooth with good body. Citrus with a touch of dark fruit in the ititial taste, with the dark malts roastiness staying through the finish and aftertaste. All this is nicely balanced with enough bittering in the middle and finish to lay claim to its IPA label.

I was excited for this brew after Summit's Unchained series black ale from years ago. This is a new recipe and another excellent take on the style. The black malts stand up (even cover the aroma) with dark toast, barbecue, and unsweetened cocoa. I even got a touch of raisin and grape at first. The hops then sweep in with dank grapefruit and orange rind. A dry, cracked pepper finish rolls through at the end. I'd buy a 6er, this is a damn fine beer.

Great Black Ale! Aroma and flavor profile of pine, citrus, mocha, and dark fruit. Dry and bitter finish, both roasted and hoppy. Very creamy mouthfeel.

Pours a black color. The head is small, and leaves minimal lacing. The aroma is quite balanced between the malt and the hops. There is some chocolate, burnt malt, and some citrus. The taste noticeably more bitter than the aroma. The citrus comes through more too. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a soft texture, and ample carbonation. Overall, Black IPA is one of my least favorite beer styles. To they all seem like a mess to me with good flavors clashing with other good flavors instead of complimenting them. This version from Summit doesn't clash as much as most Black IPAs I've tasted, but it still tastes disjointed to me. I'm sure others will like this beer. I, however, will pass on it in the future.

12oz brown bottle, sample from brewery.
Sudsy brew, close to pitch black. Piney, citrusy, brown bread, burnt toast, and an herbal tone in the nose. Very smooth, tame with the roasted character with some mild cocoa and burnt toast flavors. Good amount of hop bitterness to show that it is an IPA of sorts. Lots of hop flavor with, some dark fruit and a kiss of alcohol in the middle. Very much to style, very drinkable for a slightly bigger beer.
