Coconut Stout with lactose, coconut and vanilla

During a Vermont winter, we embrace the freeze. We relish in the cold wonders the region delivers, and our dark beers get us through the frigid. Yet we long for warmth and even dream of the tropics. While splitting wood for a fire, a vision emerged of cracking coconuts on a hot sunny beach, and Split Seasonality was born. This smooth 7% ABV stout combines a thick dark winter ale with coconut flavors of the tropics and a dash of rich vanilla, somehow splitting the frozen season in two and carrying us through to a thaw, where warmth may naturally emerge again.

From a 16oz can, dated 10/12/22. Served in a tulip.

Pours oak-brown, opaque in the glass and with no discernible highlights. A finger-plus of mocha suds doesn’t last but a few seconds, leaving a fizzy collar and some spotty lacing.

Nose is earthy, woody and roasty-toasty. Aroma of toasted coconut - german chocolate cake - cedar and vanilla. Nice; not overpowering.

Taste is in line with the nose, minimally sweet, dry with earthy bitterness. Tasting unsweetened chocolate, burnt coffee and toasted coconut, all in pretty much equal measure. Cedar and vanilla fumes in the sinuses.

Feel is clean and dry, powdery-smooth, medium-light bodied, brightly but not aggressively carbonated. A little mouth-coating creaminess from the lactose by the end of the glass but, if you weren’t paying attention, you missed it.

Overall, a really nice flavored, mid-abv stout. Light bodied and minimally sweet relative to the style, making this an exceptionally easy-drinker. I think that if I had to drink more than a couple of these I might wish that the coconut was dialed back a smidge but, to be fair, I’m not sure who sets out to get hammered on coconut flavored beer.
