"Hanihannu." Honey/Apple ale. 4.50% ABV. Introduced summer 2015 to K and S-group stores.
Reviewed live in Kuopio, Finland, where it was purchased at a supermarket. Served cold into a pilsner glass and allowed to come to temperature over the course of consumption.
APPEARANCE: ~3 inches wide. Off-white colour. Standard complexion and consistency, with a nice creamy look to it. Recedes fully within 4 minutes, leaving no lacing.
Body is a clear apple juice/copper of nice vibrance and good clarity. No yeast particles or hop sediment is visible.
Looks appropriate for its stated style, but there's nothing unique or special about it.
AROMA: Nails the honey and apple one-two punch, but the aroma doesn't suggest much in terms of intricacy or subtlety. I get sweet honey/honey malts, apple puree, Munich malt, pleasant fruity hops, and fresh apple juice. I love that it avoids venturing into cidery or artificial apple territory. Certainly pleasant, if a biteen synthetic. Lacks any lively yeast aromatics. Luckily, there's no booziness and I don't find any off-notes.
Aromatic intensity is above average.
TASTE & TEXTURE: The clean crisp mouthfeel lends itself naturally to a clean straightforward presentation of the flavour profile, its predictable smoothness and wetness fitting the plainness of the shallow but pleasant apple notes. I find apple juice, fruity hops, and apple puree, but never any artificial apple extract or off-putting cidery notes. The honey is much less prominent than the apple, but lends plenty of sweetness nevertheless. Munich malts are the glue holding it together, but cohesive as it is, it never comes off gestalt.
It's a simple build, but a likable one. Alcohol is well hidden. Sure, it's a bit too syrupy and sticky, but it's aptly light bodied and refreshing, which fits into the summer ale motif. Balance isn't dialed in (it's way too sweet) and it has a rough-around-the-edges flavour profile, but it's enjoyable for what it is. Overcarbonation is obvious.
There's no harmony of texture and taste, nor does the former elevate the beer as a whole. A bit more acidity and softness would do wonders to accentuate the apple.
OVERALL: It isn't the juicy apple ale you might hope for, but it avoids the ruinous raw honey sweetness and/or artificial apple cidre notes that could make it awful; this isn't your usual Blue Moon type of honey apple beer. Consistent with the other Teerenpeli offerings I've tried in that it's a pretty middle-of-the-road beer with no remarkable characteristics. It won't impress the discerning drinker, but it's a nice change from the usual pale lager shlock dominating Finnish shelves.
