Canned on 7/9/24; consumed on 12/16/24

Pours a crystal-clear, sunny golden hue capped with just over a finger of soapy, off-white foam; decent head retention leaves a slim layer of cap, thin, frothy collar, and a select few strands of webby lacing encircling the walls of the glass.

Aromas of light beechwood smoke and crispy bacon settle through predominant white toast, with a smoked ham backing leading to fresh wafts of clean, doughy lager yeast.

Taste opens to a tinge of beechwood smoke as accents of doughy yeast establish against backing minerality; a savory ham undercurrent grazes the back end of the palate, leaving notes of brown bread crusts on the finish.

Mouthfeel offers a light body and moderate fluff of semi-spritzy carbonation; flaky-crispness tones clean texturing into the mid-palate, while ultra-vague toastiness marks the finish.

Meatier smoke refocuses a clean and bready Helles base in this detailed expansion of the style, remaining slight while simultaneously immensely layered.

2024/11/14 saw a new smoked helles from Bierstadt Lagerhaus and bought two 4-packs on the spot. One of the few things in beer that still really excites me is smoked beers/rauchbiere, and heretofore Bierstadt Lagerhaus has largely deserved its high reputation as one of the best traditional German lager breweries stateside.

4.8% ABV. "Smoked Helles." "100% Beechwood Smoked Malt." "Double decocted."

Evident minerality. Subtle (read: disappointingly neutral) beechwood smoked malt flavour - pleasant, but absent of the more assertive/aggressive character one generally wants in a great rauchbier. I'm starting to wonder if they just bought Weyermann malt and used that, then slapped the "smoked lager" label on this (as opposed to, say, using malt smoked with different/more interesting woods and/or malt smoked with wood of different origin from another maltster, both approaches that might contribute more interesting depth and character of flavour). The smokiness is noticeable but not overpowering, but for me the best smoked beers are loud and unapologetic, and their smokey flavours are more distinctive.

Damned crisp and refreshing, particularly for a smoked beer. Carbonation level is perfect. Clean drinking. On the softer side for a smoked beer.

There's a lot to like here, and I love to see more smoked beers on the market in the USA. This is solid fare for the intended style, checking all the necessary boxes, but it isn't the rauchbier equivalent to Bierstadt Lagerhaus' pilsner, and it won't dazzle discerning regular drinkers of the style or compete seriously with the creme de la creme currently still coming out of Bamberg. A likable effort from Bierstadt Lagerhaus, but if we're comparing it to the other beers coming out of the same brewery, this one doesn't really sing.

Goldenrod crystal clear pour, lively coarse head that flees immediately with faint lacing.

Deep, rich smoke for the first few sips that then settles into an herbal, cinnamony, fruity and smoky savory landscape of deliciousness. Almost some dunkel noted here. Faint maple sweetness. Massively crisp. So nice!

Never let down by Bierstadt, their lager game is absolute top. Really appreciate evrrything they do.
