It was around 2009 when i was there last, but one of those places you dont forget. I was with a medium sized group so service didnt exist. Selection was about what you would expect from a tourist fill beer hall. Didnt try the food, so no news there. Over all worth seeing just to say you did it. Just dont expect great things.

It's the experience you will instaface, snapwitter and mytube all day. The vibe alone is worth the visit. This place is as authentic, quintessential experience as it gets anywhere. If you're worried about the selection, the food or the fact they don't have whalezbro, then you suck.

The Hofbrauhaus is packed day and night, so it may take a while to be waited on, but once you are waited on, the waitress/beer maid will visit you often. Come for the atmosphere during the day, but depart before night unless you're okay with being around the sloppiest of drunks. The food is old-worldly to say the least, so if you're into calf lung, the cuisine here is top notch!

Although we unknowingly stumbled upon this well-known "tourist trap"/historic local brewhouse, we lucked into being present on the day of apparently one of the bigger soccer matches of the year with FC Bayern playing one of the best French teams. The atmosphere was raucous as team chants rang throughout the noisy open seating area and service was suprisingly swift considering all the patrons packed into one large room. Enjoyable experience, enjoying beers next to strangers and eventually striking up conversation when discovering an English-speaker in our midst. The atmosphere on this day was what made the experience, the liter beers didn't hurt. The original Helles Lager was solid. The Dunkel not my cup of tea. The food... is apparently not what they are known for.

Of course, no trip to Munich is complete without having a beer here, the world's most famous beer hall. This royal brewery was founded in 1589 to provide Bavarian King Wilhelm with his own dark beer. Hofbrau is now one of the most popular of Munich's breweries. Yes, there are tourists here for selfies and the oompa music; yes, it can become quite crowded, but .... you gotta go. I stopped by for lunch in the main hall during a relatively quiet Monday morning. There are rows upon rows of rustic wooden tables and benches. (The private tables are reserved for regulars.) Really, it is a beautiful room with arches and ceiling murals. As for service, a waiter came by the moment I sat down and in minutes brought me a glorious liter of some delicious dark beer - dunkles. Add to that some delectable pork and spätzle and I was in Heaven and walked away a happy camper. If you choose to not order a meal, then flag down a dirndl clad waitress for a giant pretzel. BTW: at the time of my visit (November 2017), a liter cost 8.60 euros.

Come for the history. This place is mobbed as it is one of the top tourist destinations, but its worth a stop for a liter. Its incredibly large and filled to capacity both inside and out. The beer is ok, but its worth seeing such an important part of history.

There isn't much that I can say about this brewery that hasn't been said, but to counteract the reports of the crowds, find a way to go early. We got there on a Monday at 11:00 and it was mostly empty. No music playing yet, but the beer was flowing. The vibe is huge here, thus a 5.0 score. Being this early the service was excellent.

I discovered that they had their Maibock available, so I ordered that and my wife had the Weissbier. Both were very good. To go with the beer we ordered a pretzel that was as big around as my head, and I based my food score of this review solely on that thing. Very tasty. They also have wine and limited spirits available.

Note: We left and came back 2-3 hours later just to walk in to see thee activity. Things were hopping by then, and the music was playing. But to anyone reading this, you gotta' go.

Here's the real deal--one of the very first buildings to be rebuilt after Munich was flattened in World War II. The place is huge with a large courtyard. The place is filled with tourists and (perhaps) locals. I did see some lederhosen but that may be the performers on break.

The place is happening with lots of frenetic activity, mostly from the servers racing around, scurrying between visitors and gawkers.

I don't see a listing for the HB house tent at Octoberfest so I'm writing it under this listing. Just at the Octoberfest this year 2016 which is just ending now. It was quite a wait to get in and I would recommend going early in the morning unless your going on a weekday. It took us about two hours to get in to the no reservation area, but once we got in it was awesome. I would say there was about three thousand people in the tent with about 3/4 of the tables reserved. If you want a table you have to reserve one for ten people about a year in advance so good luck with that. Otherwise it standing style tables. You can get the big beer mugs from the German girls going around and pay them directly, But no real food unless you have a table reserved. They do sell the big pretzels which is what we got. Over all it was like the biggest party you have ever seen with the German music band playing in the center and everything. If you want a less crowded quieter experience to to the main Hofbrauhous in Munich. Make reservations a week or more in advance if your going during Octoberfest! Prost!

If you are traveling in Germany (i.e., do not live there), you HAVE to experience the Hofbräuhaus in München. When people think of Germany, this is the picture that comes into their minds. Oompah band, sauerkraut with a variety of wurst, and gemutlichkeit; if you don't have a good time here, you are dead.

A must see destination for beer lovers traveling through Munich if at the least to enjoy the fresh beer and see this vast beer hall. Great beer, good service and descent food.

It shouldn't be too surprising that you'll only find Hofbräu beer being served here and a fairly standard menu of German pub food. The service was courteous but like much of Bavaria, don't wait for a server to stop over you'll have to let him know you thirsty or hungry.

There are three floors with group seating, an oompah band with a slightly raucous party crowd on the first, at let post Oktoberfest. The second floor has a quieter table service where you can sit with just your party. The third floor was all reserved seating for large tour bus sized parties.

This place is crazy. I went in the week leading up to Oktoberfest so my opinion may be skewed by a lot of things. First off, come in and sit anywhere. All community seating and no-one minds a friend, right? Secondly, look for the pretzel lady. €4 (ish) later, start looking over the menu for some awesome food and beer. They have different language menus available, ask for one if you need one! Seevice was terri le, but it was busy and like I said, during the lead-in to oktoberfest.. They had an awesome band and the vibe was great!

In the heart of Munich, this is why you come to this city. Dark wood, old world ambience. Oompah band in lederhosen cranking out the singing songs. Didn't eat anything , just come here for the bier and the atmosphere. Touristy? Yes. But, I don't live in Munich so I must be a tourist!

Loved the atmosphere when we walked out in. Just what I was expecting from a traditional German beer hall. Very busy but we were welcomed when we asked to sit with two other men at one of the tables. It took awhile to get someone to take our beer order. Even longer to get our food order in. The giant pretzels were outstanding and the bratwurst and sauerkraut was out of this world. They had a band playing traditional German music and there were groups of patrons singing along with the band. Overall a terrific experience for an American.

Kind of a must-go place in Munich, but the dream is better than the reality. Super crowded most of the time, so expect to wander around for a while or sit upstairs in one of the off-the-beaten-path areas of the place to get a seat. Beer is not great and is a little more expensive than other places. If you are in college, go for it. If you are visiting with your family, you might want to avoid the crowd and noise (or just walk through to check it out, but eat/drink elsewhere).

Visited this place a few times over the years, amazing how it hasn't changed! The atmosphere is outstanding, with oompah bands playing and everyone just really enjoying themselves. The beer is great and food as well. So much culture, even if it a bit of a tourist trap. A must see if you are in Munich!

Visited in 2007 while touring Europe. This brewery had the traditional beer hall style. Very old Germany and Bavaria nostalgia, it was great to go for the experience. There are tables with names above them, DO NOT sit at these tables you will not be served and may be asked to leave. These tables are reserved for regulars, please be polite and sit at the other tables.

Luckily we knew this going in and had a great time. Nice atmosphere, good beer, and low prices seeing as you get a liter of beer.

It's been years since I visited the Hofbräuhaus in Munich. This is a must see beer dream for any beer aficionado.

The atmosphere is fantastic and ancient. The beer selection is very good for a German brewery/restaurant. A must eat dish is Haxen- braised pork shank with remnants of seared skin; it's fantastic.

Expect to be seated with strangers at long tables. It's part of the unique experience in Germany.

For the overall experience, this world famous beer hall deserves a perfect score. My score (4.85) is balancing their many excellent beers and very good food, as well as service (friendly but swift). For anyone lucky enough to visit Munich, this is a must.

The history, the beer, the food, the music, the most renowned German Beer Hall probably in the entire country of Germany is The Hofbrauhaus. This place is dream. Prices are a little high but you don't need to drink much to get have a good time here. The only negative side to this place is that it is full of tourists. Lowenbrau or Spaten are the better choices if you want to avoid that scene but nonetheless this place is great.

A great place to visit while in Munich. It has that real Bavarian feel. The place is packed full of people, especially during the football game night. It’s a must do in Munich to treat yourself to a 1l glass of beer together with some typcial Bavarian cuisine. Awesome.

A fun spot but a bit of a tourist trap. A must on your first visit to Munich, but not so much after that. The food is ok, and there is usually a traditional German band playing. A fun place to people watch, although most of the patrons are out of towers.

A bit of a downer when you find out there are a several HB Haus locations elsewhere in the US etc.

A staple of beer lore. You cannot go to Munich and not stop by the Hofbrauhaus. It only takes one or two litres to get the juices flowing. The sounds of Bavarian music, coupled with traditional Bavarian waitresses made for an incredible atmosphere.

The food was good, but only a fair value for the price. You're obviously paying for more than just the food. The beers are actually reasonably priced, or at least what I was expecting to pay.

Overall, this place is great, and I fully intend to return each time I visit Munich--if I am ever so lucky.

One of the best places in Munich.

This place is amazing, the service is super fast (20-40 seconds and the beer is on your table), the atmosphere is amazing (along with traditional music that played occasionally), I ordered potatoes too, and they were superb!

No words to explain this place, maybe videos will help...

If you're in Munich - You MUST try this place (I've been there almost 3 hours straight)

I lived in Munich for 5 years. This is THE Münchener Bierhalle. Hofbräu is not the best of the six München Helles lagers*, nor is the Hofbräuhaus the most authentic**, but it has carved out a wonderful place between touristy and legitimate that no other place has.

Yes, there are tourists there. There are also locals in droves. The locale is close to Marienplatz but you'll have to venture north into Schwabing for the newer, cooler Munich.

No trip to Munich is complete without a visit.

* Augustiner Helles is the best Munich Helles. Tegernseer is even better though from further south in Bavaria.
** The Löwenbräukeller can't be beat for authenticity and ambience awesomeness.
