From the beer list: "This American style Hefeweizen is a wheat beer made with American Hefeweizen yeast giving notes of clove and banana" - what exactly that means I'm not sure. Are they referring to yeast that came from an American lab (White Labs, Wyeast) that has Bavarian origins? Or are they referring to an actual strain of yeast that was developed in America and is not derived from a strain originally out of Bavaria? Odd. It basically appears as a traditional Bavarian weizen, although there is a little bit of a citrusy character to it that might be coming from American hops - I'm not sure - but they don't mention American hops.
It's a hazy golden beneath a short head of bright white that offers limited head retention and next to no lacing (dirty bar glass?). It certainly doesn't have the appearance of a great Bavarian example.
The aroma is citrusy with lemon over some wheaty malt.
The flavor opens up and there's more sweetish wheaty malt as well as some leafy hops, a hint of clove, and some chalky mineral that also lingers in the dry, citrusy finish. The banana doesn't come through for me.
In the mouth it's medium-light in body and delicately crisp with a median carbonation.
Overall, this might be made with a derivation of a Bavarian yeast strain, or it might not, but in any case it doesn't really come off as if it is. As an American wheat done in the style it's fine. As a Bavarian-style hefeweizen it's lacking. It's just not great overall. Balanced? Yes. Flavorful? Yes. Banana and clove? Not so much. Zesty carbonation? No. It's OK, but I feel that this is one of those beer styles where you choose a side, and this one just straddles the fence.
