Appearance –The beer is served a hazy orange color with a tint of red. Upon serving there is a light level of white foam atop the brew that fades slowly over time to leave a bit of spiderweb lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strongest of citrus aromas of grapefruit and a little bit of orange. Along with these smells comes some of the lactose milkiness as a little bit of a caramel malt. There are hints of floral hops as well as a bit of an herbal smell as well, giving a rather inviting aroma overall.
Taste – The taste begins and maintains a rather strong but smooth grapefruit taste being a mix of slightly bitter grapefruit hop and some grapefruit juice sweetness in flavor. Upfront there is some of the lactose that is present in the nose with it fading slightly more toward the end of the flavor profile. A light bready and fruity base creates a rather nioce backbone malt flvor with some light caramel that is present upfront fading over the flavor profile. Toward the end of the taste some herbal and floral flavors (potentially from the hibiscus) meet up with the grapefruit hop and malt to leave a clean and slightly bittered grapefruit flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is dead center in terms of its thickness, crispness, and chewiness with this very neutral feel being quite appropriate for the mix of flavors (milk, fruit, malt, citrus and flral hop) and creates a dangerously easy sipping brew.
Overall – This was a great take on an IPA brewed with lactose. The hibiscus added some herbal notes that with the citrus hop and citrus juice taste creates one fantastic brew.
