Served on tap in a chalice glass
Appearance – The beer is served a hazy orange color with a small fizzy white head of foam. The head fades very fast to leave a trace of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is huge of a candied sugar and sweet fruit smell of tangerine, pineapple, and some dark fruits of plum and cherry. Along with these smells comes a good showing of yeast, coriander, clove and a light grass, which produce a very warming and inviting smell overall.
Taste – The taste begins with a very bready and sweet taste with tons of fruity and sugary flavors. The sweet are of candied sugar, caramel, pineapple, mango, tangerine and some cherry. Along with the sweeter tastes are flavors of clove and coriander upfront. As the taste advances, the sweeter tastes seem to increase and are joined by some flavors of yeast as well as a bit more spice of clove, coriander lemongrass. The sweeter tastes get rather potent toward the end, and with a light warming alcohol taste, one is left with a sugary and fruity sweet, yeasty, and warming taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is average in thickness and chewiness for a Belgium Strong of 9.4 % with a carbonation level that was on the lower side. A bit more carbonation may have been slightly better for the Belgium yeast, sweet, and spiced tastes of the brew, but overall the feel was OK.
Overall – This is a big and sweet Belgium pale strong brew. It has a lot of flavor, but is one, due to the sweetness, that is hard to go back to again and again, as it is more filling/cloying. Lots of flavor and a good brew, but a little more dryness may have made it a bit more fitting for its style. All said, a fun try if you get a chance.
