Served on tap in a chalice glass
Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden amber color with a one finger head of white foam. The head has a great level of retention, lasting for some time before slowly fading to leave tons of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is sweet with lots of candied sugar, banana, bubblegum, light fruits of peach, apricot and pear, as well as some big aromas of clove and coriander. Along with these smells comes some notes of a yeastiness and a decent showing of bread and dough. Overall, it is sweet, Belgian spiced and inviting.
Taste – The taste begins just as one may expect from the nose, with lots of sweet and malty tastes. The sweet is heavy of light fruits and a candied sugar taste, while the malt is a mix of a lightly toasted bready flavor as well as a whole lot of a doughy taste. Right from the start there is also some nice coriander and clove spice tastes, with a bit of bubblegum, which grow slightly stronger as the taste advances. While the taste advances, some banana, yeast, and a bit of pepper come to the tongue. In the end with a little bit of hay and grass that hits the tongue, and one is left with a sweet and smooth, fruity, and candy taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is big and chewy with a carbonation level that is on the slightly higher side. For the sweet fruit and candied tastes, as well as the yeast and bubblegum flavors, the feel is very nice and makes this one a rich and sweet sipper.
Overall – While a little on the sweeter side for a Biere de Garde, this one defiantly has tons of flavor and still maintains a very balanced drinking taste and feel. While you may not want to session this brew, this brew I would recommend for finishing a night with as a solid desert style brew. It’s rich tasting, very drinkable, and has a pleasant sweetness. If it could be dried out a little bit more with a stronger attenuating yeast this would be spot on. Sweet for my taste, but overall tasty!!!
