Served on tap in a snifter glass
Appearance- The beer pours a clear golden amber color with a one finger head of white foam. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a ton of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is big of a grainy and wheaty smell mixed with some aromas of a caramel sweetness and a touch of orange citrus. Along with these smells comes some nice toasted malt and smoke smells along with a bit of herbal hop. There is a touch of a biting astringent smell, which actually melds rather well with the rest, creating a malty and warming aroma.
Taste- the taste begins with a heavy malty taste with lots of grain and bread that has a touch of caramel sweetness mixed with a moderate showing of a herbal hop. Along with these tastes comes some light corn tastes as well as a little bit of smoke. As the taste advances the smoke increases a bit and is joined by some hot boozy flavors. At the very end the smoke increase a bit and is joined by more corn syrup and caramel sweetness and with a bit more herb and earth, one is left with a rather warming “amped up” malt liquor like taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is medium in thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is average. I would have liked a little thinner feel, in light of the nice hot boozy and malt like flavors of the brew, but overall the feel was pretty decent and made for a more approachable and malt/booze complementing feel.
Overall – A nice robust sipper that is easy drinking, boozy, and quite nice and flavorful. A nice take on a malt like strong ale. A brew similar to a Hurricane HG with better flavor, some nice accents (smoke, light citrus, herbal hop..) all while still delivering that hotness and straight up “get you where you want to go to a happy place quick” sorta nature.
