Eight & Sand Beer Co. "Smoked Pineapple Hefeweizen"
1 pint can, "CANNED ON 10/14/19 12:55 SHAUN OF THE DEAD"
$3.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Smoked Pineapple Hefeweizen? How could I pass that up? It sounds disgusting, but it's like a train wreck, you've got to stop and check it out. OK, so, it looks like a hefeweizen. It's a cloudy golden in color beneath a massive head of white foam. I'll have to let it die down a bit before I can sip it. There's some soft and lightly sweet pineapple in the aroma, and just a touch of smokiness. It's weird but not nearly as weird as I thought it would be. In tasting it I get the pineapple upfront, followed by banana from the yeast, and then the smokiness which is pretty soft but reminds me of a rauchbier from Bamberg. I'm guessing it's Beechwood but I can't be sure. It's actually not bad at all, and pretty damned interesting! Being a fan of rauchbiers I like how the smokiness lingers in the finish. It's grainy, wheaty, sweetish, and fruity followed by the smokiness - excellent! The secret, I'm sure, is in getting just a little bit of smokiness to it - and I guess, not too much pineapple either. It's nicely balanced across the board. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp-then-smooth. The head held up well, but not as well as the best of German hefeweizens do, and the lacing follows that. Still, I think it warrants a 4.25 out of 5 for appearance. Overall I am really loving this beer.
