Picked up a half liter bottle at a getrankemarkt in northern Bavaria dated best by 24.05.24. Just had a bottle of their traditional Helles Hefeweizen so it’s a good comparison. Obviously roasted malt dominates but I’m surprised how little of the normal Hefe flavors and yeast come through. It’s even a bit funky and sweet. A bit disappointing, certainly many better examples in Germany and without a doubt better Hefes in Bamberg.

Got this at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam.

From a bottle into a weizen glass.

APPEARANCE: Pours a 2+ finger thin off-white head. Some carbonation evident. A dark chocolate brown, maybe bistre coloured. Head dissipates rather fast into a thin film and leaves some thin bubbly lacing. Film soon disappears almost completely and leaves minimal splotchy lacing. Nice colour, but the head is disappointing.

SMELL: Wheat malt and a bit of sweet citrus lemon as well. Some sweet caramel malt comes though in the background as well.

TASTE: Some wheat malt and sweet caramel malt up front, followed by some sweet citrus lemon afterwards. A strong sweet malt aftertaste lingers for a while at the end. Pretty sweet, but not offensive.

PALATE: Medium body with medium carbonation. Very creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth as well with no bite and finished on the dryer side. True to style and quite creamy. Nice.

OVERALL: Decent enough. A drinkable and enjoyable beer, but nothing worth writing home about. I'd have it again, but I wouldn't go out of my way.

served from a bottle, perhaps to keep the sediment content constant for each beer. almost totally opaque with surprisingly little head. the aroma was deliciously dark with a generous hop bouquet. there was minimal bitterness at the end but some good hop flavor to go along with the nutty malt character. the mouthfeel was a litle too dry for my liking

I had this from a bottle at the brewery.

A: Hazy, brownish-orange. Off-white head, a little retention, good lace.

S: A little bread, banana and raisin.

T: Fairly plain, but a little banana bread.

M: Moderate body and carbonation.

D: It's alright, but it doesn't bring me back for more.

Smooth compact head, pillowy, lasting on a dark brown opaque body. Very pleasing smell, sweet wheaty notes combined with a moderate yeasty fruitiness showing the classic Bavarian banana aroma. The taste too is pleasing, yet hard to describe. Yeasty notes of banana and bubble gum with fresh and sweet cereals. It’s good! Mouthfeel is round and full. Drinkable!
