(on tap at the brewery, served in a Euro-style pint glass)
L: dark crimson red liquid, fleeting gummy-foamy cap, thin bands of lace
S: dark rye bread, hint of molasses... as it warms, peculiar, very vibrant notes of air-blistered, oxidized yeast, past-prime whole-flower hops, and freshly-milled dry grist - granted, I was sitting outside not far from the open-doors of the brewhouse, but did not smell these aromas wafting in the air, only when I dug my nose into the glass - hmm...
T: dark rye bread, molasses, herbal earthy bitterness... sweetish note; piney, grapefruity hopping with moderate spiciness... black IPA territory for sure - porter-ish malt flavors, but without any coffee-like roast flavor... later, after its warmed a bit, an interesting bourbon-like rye whiskey note lingers in the aftertaste - NOTE: this flavor was NOT reminiscent of bourbon-barrel aging, but of actual bourbon itself - not sure I've ever tasted something quite like that prominent in a rye beer
F: smooth, hearty, clean but with a slight grit... shame I couldn't stay for another - too easy to drink
O: despite some unpolished flourishes, this is pretty darn tasty with room to tweak to enhance distinction... would be interested to try a stronger version, perhaps barrel-aged as well... I do dig this black rye 'IPA' angle, not sure that I've come across many
