Just in time for the lenten season, the original spring beer pulls from the depths of the souther German monastic libations and lands in a taproom in central Kentucky.
Chew-Bock-A is a throwback bock beer, one that pours dark brown and a shade shy of black. Coffee-like in color, the beer's mocha whipped head adorns a soft and toasty aromatic blend of cocoa, coffee, charred toast and a light savory sorghum roundness. Malty at its core, the beer's mild molasses and sorghum flavors are earthy and supple with sweetness.
As the beer rolls across the middle palate, the richness of malt takes a toasty, savory taste with relaxed sweetness. A rounded nougat-like taste trends semidry with dark chocolate, bold roast coffee, lightly torched toffee, nutty pecan and a hint of grilled stone fruit in the background. Light bitterness seems as much of toasted grain as from hops while the finish is woodsy and chicory-like.
Medium full in body, the beer's creamy toast is lighter than porter but bolder than brown ale. Its toasted savory flavors are elegant and robust at the same time- perfect for barbecue and other grilled meats. A medium long aftertaste of charred toast lingers with a kiss of campfire.
