What's old is new, is old again. We took German hops and crossed them with American hops to create some of the Pacific Northwest's most iconic hop flavors. And now the Germans are doing the same: crossing American hops with their noble varieties for unique and tantalizing flavor.
The Double D's Melons of Mirror Twin is such a beer that showcases these Germanic Huell Melon hops with an even keel balance of pale ale that starts with a pale gold hue and soft haze. Its crowning froth is enlivened with lemongrass, green tea, floral honeysuckle and yellow citrus. Mild caramel and honey align on the tongue for a moderate and malty introduction.
But as the hops roll onto the middle palate, the malt sweetness relaxes and the flavors trend bittersweet with lemon, lime, green berry and kiwi. A melon-like juiciness seems like honeydew with a mild and orchard fruit softness. The ale continues to dry and the hops gain bitterness for a spicy Germanic finish that's herbal of lemon pepper, tea and mint.
With a linger of honeysuckle and thin caramel, the pale ale is redolent of those spicy, grassy Germanic hops that outlast the malts with a medium long linger of sassafras, melon rind and green tea.
