The purple haze sure ain't what it used to be. The twinning-is-winning approach pits the Mirror Twin Brewing's "Last Night Got A Little Hazy" New England-style iPA up against a version of that beer that utilizes a generous dosing of blueberries for a taste that's friendly, soft, tangy and robust.
A foggy mauve color overcomes the glass along with a spotty froth to adorn the rim. Blueberry Haze's aromas are citrusy, berry-like and juicy with tropical character. Seeming subtle with wine cooler character, the beer's taste is modestly sweet with fruit juices, hard candy and light pastry.
Just when the beer might side too much with the fruit and sweet side, the malt sweetness begins to dissolve and the tart, spicy and flavorful hops quickly take command of the taste. Citrusy with grapefruit, lime, lemon and orange; and then lighlty tropical with dragonfruit, pinepaple and kiwi; the taste carries an overcast of blueberry that's undeniable at any part in the beer's taste. Trailing into a moderately resinous grass, pine and pepper bitterness, its that spiciness of berry skins and seeds that keep the fruit additions front and center, even in the beer's late palate.
Medium bodied and trending dry, Blueberry Haze is tart, meagerly sweet and spicy with pectin, but is ultimately an bitter beer but one with balance, floral contributions and an overall succulent taste that keeps hop heads ordering the haze over and over again.
