Bridging the gap between the roasty taste of winter and the tangy fruitiness of summer, Mirror Twin's raspberry stout shows quite the schizophrenic sides of the calendar.
Generally black and topped with a light mocha sheet, Ghost in a Jar leads with a yin and a yang of tart berries, coffee, vinous acidity and roasted nuttiness. Back and forth, the scent extends on the palate striking first with the sweetness of burnt sugars for a candied roast flavor early on the tongue.
Sweetness begins to drift while the strong roast character marches through dark roast coffee, cocoa, walnut and a tame campfire drift. The middle palate however is under attack from the tartness of red berries that scream raspberries but also share elements of cranberry, currant and red grape. A vinous red wine tartness extends into a light tannic bite with a hoppy bitterness that reminds the palate of French press coffee with a splash of berry syrup.
Full bodied but broken up by the tartness from fruit, a lighter sense of drinkability overcomes the session. Light in carbonation, a slight watery character is highlighted by berry acidity as the final flavor is one of cherry cola on a slightly watery side.
