In Kentucky's Bluegrass region, being blue is a good thing. And as the Bluegrass brewers of Mirror Twin and Rock House join teams, their blueberry and lemon infused Belgian styled witbier fits in nicely in the "see of blue" community.
With all this blue talk, Blueberry Wit Lemon pours a rather lavender purple hue and with the classic haze expected of Belgian ale and wheat beer. As the beer's part froth, part fizz character of foam dissipates it leaves behind a tangy perfume of citrus, berry and dark fruit. A slim winey tone rounds out the nose before its light and bready taste gently coats the tongue with sourdough and shortcake.
The middle palate brings a tart berry taste that leaves no confusion about the blueberry fruit. Tangy and light in its acidity but robust in its fruit forward portrayal, hints of cranberry, red grape, currant and blackberry support the blueberry nicely. The beer's yeast character underneath brings a tart wine-like tendency with orange, lemon, green apple and white grape for balance and charm with a light white pepper spice cleaning up the late palate.
Smooth, tart and refreshing, the beer seems to be part Belgian inspired but also leaning on wine cooler flavors for a taste that edges toward gose sourness before stopping at the lemon tartness instead. Where the beer lacks punch, it excels in mass appeal and low fussiness.
