Adding a creamy dose of lactose to their star studded hazy IPA portfolio gives Mirror Twin's Motueka, Citra, Mandarina Bavaria hops laden ale an udderly distinct character.
Pale straw and lemon in color, Hazing in the Pasture cast a turbid matte finish on the glass before a patient separation of froth pulls from the beer. A radiant scent of citronella comes swiftly with a host of orange oils and their herbal counterparts for a gentle drift of cannabis. Pastry, cereal and shortbread come calling as the malty rich taste and its velvety creaminess converge on the early palate.
But as the ale washes the middle palate, its candied citrus taste pulls from the hops and gives the tastebuds a decidedly tangerine, red grapefruit, mango, lemon and pineapple medley. Candied in their form, a taste of creamed candy seems vanilla-like to sooth the herbal bite of hops that transcend into a smoothly bitter late palate with a pep of botanical gin spice.
Medium bodied but seemingly fuller, the lactose keeps a portion of the beer's heft alive although it strives for a malty dry finish with verbena, green tea, sassafras and fresh spruce shining just after the malt in a medium length afterglow.
