There was a time when the newest beer in the American landscape was a beer of necessity, a beer of opportunity, a beer of scavengers. And that beer was born of the West Coast miners on their travels across America's barren landscape. While that Californian style rarely makes an appearance, the Mirror Twin brewery gets right on track with this type of beer inspired by steam.
Caught somewhere between copper and gold, their Back on Track sounds more like a 80's Breakfast Club sound but smells steely of caramel, nutty, toasty, floral and sweetly of caramel popcorn. Once on the tongue, the sweetness of caramel, honey and granola play out shyly on the middle palate.
As its sweetness relaxes on the middle palate, the toasty, nutty remnants of malt take on a more flavorful roll while the sweetness starts to trail off. Hints of butterscotch remain while the floral aromas turn to a spicy, woodsy and pleasanlty vegetal taste late on the throat.
Medium bodied and drinking in the mouthfeel somewhere between a Vienna Lager and an American Amber Ale, this Californian styled Steam Beer has a snappy finish with a malty dry aftertaste that lingers with peanut skins and dry granola once more.
