As a kid, I never wanted monsters under my bed. But if they are more like these, then bring on the monsters! Mirror Twin Brewing's Monster series now takes us back to a stronger, slightly resinous, citrusy dedicated taste with a focus on Amarillo hops in a double dry-hopped, imperial IPA form.
Pale and opaque with a hazy mate taupe finish, Double! Amarillo Monster leaps right out with a citrusy scent that's lead by a strong grapefruit presence. Along with herbal, grassy and sprucy scents, the beer's character is first turned over to an initial taste of poundcake, cereal and agave sweetness in a full and malty display
And as the Amarillo hops shine through the grains, its intense taste of pink grapefruit once again takes center stage. With a backdrop of ripe mandarin oranges, a hint of lemon and a pep of pineapple, the hops show to be more than a one-dimensional taste. Trending rich, slightly bitter, yet remaining soft, a smooth but spicy bitterness seems of fresh spruce, fragrant grasses and a mild mannered vodka bite.
Full but gentle on the palate, this double monster of a beer finishes malty and slightly drying with a focus on light and peppery resins. An alcohol taste of peppery vodka accompanies a medium long finish of muddled citrus peels and pine needles in a slightly more hefty version than the non-double version.
