As a kid (I feel like I've started a lot of stories this way lately), I never wanted monsters under my bed. But if they are more like these, then bring on the monsters! Mirror Twin Brewing's Monster series now takes us back to a stronger, fruitier, more peachy taste with a focus on Amarillo hops and peach puree in a double dry-hopped, imperial IPA fashion.
Turbid and opaque with a hazy mate golden-orange finish, Double! Peach Monster leaps out with a stone fruit and citronella scent that's lead by a strong nectarine presence. Along with herbal, grassy and sprucy scents, the beer's character is first turned over to an initial taste of poundcake, cereal and agave sweetness in a full and malty upstart.
And as the Amarillo hops balance the grain sweetness, its intense taste of peach starts to take the stage away from the citrusy hops. With a backdrop of ripe mandarin oranges, pineapple, apricot and nectarine, the hops and fruit combination makes the beer a complex fruit taste. Trending rich, slightly bitter, yet remaining soft, a smooth but spicy bitterness seems of fresh spruce, fragrant grasses, pectin spice and a mildly vodka-like fade late on the palate.
Full but gentle on the palate, this double monster of a beer finishes both malty and fruity, and slightly drying with a focus on stone fruit peel and pepper. An alcohol taste of peppery vodka accompanies a medium long finish of muddled orchard fruit peels in a slightly more hefty version than even Double! Amarillo Monster.
