There's been a lot of experimentation once the Berlinerweisse style was been resurrected. But the simple update of the style, coupled with nouveau hop might be the upgrade that this classic style needs.
Pale and with a cloudy lemon austere, Weisse So Serious, the Citra edition, builds a light and frothy swath of sea foam. A brisk scent forms above the glass with the overcast of citrus from the hops while an undercurrent of complementary citrus, cider, wine and must trail behind. The early palate brings a gentle sweetness of sourdough and lemondrop candy with a quick malt introduction.
As the sour ale washes the middle palate, its malty upstart falls by the wayside in favor of the piquant acidity that brings its own lemon, passionfruit, gooseberry, crabapple, white grape and lime character to the forefront. With the billowing Citra hops playing complement with tangy orange flavor, the showcase of fruit suggestions is complete. A low-lying bitterness links up with the sourness to form a taste of grapefruit late in taste.
Medium light in body, the higher alcohol adds a sangria-type spice to the finish although the ale does feel fuller and less dry than traditional Berlinerweiss, but its short linger of fruit is outlasted briefly by the herbal hops for a sour ale that even hop heads can enjoy.
