Not leaving the cooler weather of winter without a fight, the rest of the beer world looks forward to the floral, lighter, whimsical flavors of spring, but the Doppelbock style has different ideas. Spring means malt!
Dark brown and with a ruddy, rusty fogginess, Warehouse Doppelbock kicks off with a short tarnish froth that leads into an appetizing scent of dark sugars, dark fruit and deeply savory hints of sherry and alcohol spice. Sweet on the tongue, the highly malt-centric taste shares flavors of sorghum, toast, brown sugar, molasses and toffee.
A long, plush and persistent savory-sweet interplay remains steadfast on the middle palate while a backdrop of prune, raisin, cherry and grape capture the suggestion of sherry and port for a nuanced level of fruit complexity. Deep flavors of toast, light coffee, light cocoa and cola step in as the beer's tepid hops only take a slight edge off of the sweetness late on the palate.
Full bodied, spicy and somber on the palate, the double bock beer fits right at home with those early spring days that are still cool, cloudy and clammy. Simmerig spice brings alcohol warmth to an aftertaste of mulled wine and caramelized nutty sweetness.
