1 pint .9 ounce swingtop bottle
Served in a weizen glass

A - It varies in color from copper to rust to amber. It has a huge beige head.

S - It has a bready base to it. Then I pick up the yeast esters. This dunkle weisse doesn't seem to have the banana that I have noticed in other beers in the style. It seems to be more fruity.

T - The taste seems toned down compared to other dunkelweizens that I have tried. I get somewhat of a pumpernickel bread backbone. The fruitiness is there, but I don't pick up much banana.

M - Medium

O - It is a decent beer. There are definitely better options, but I wouldn't kick this beer out of bed for eating crackers.

A: The beer is clear dark reddish brown in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured into a weizen glass with a finger and a half high off white head that gradually died down but never completely faded away.
S: Aromas of bananas and wheat are present in the nose along with some hints of toffee.
T: The taste very much follows the smell and has slight hints of molasses-like sweetness.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is quite easy to drink and seems to be a good representation of the style.

Glass: Weihenstephan weizen glass

Leikeim's dunkelweizen is a fairly average dunkelweiss, not particularly strong or inventive in aroma or taste, but having the appropriate elements for the style: yeast, grain, wheat and wheat tang, banana ester, pie spice phenol. It's a textbook example that I'd have again if it were the freshest around. As it stands, Weihenstephaner's is usually fresher and less expensive, so perhaps this will be a "once in a while" beer.

Pours a towering head of small, dense, off-white bubbles that has several minutes' worth of staying power, eventually declining to a 0.5cm cap atop the body of the beer. Some lacing is left along the sides of the glass: nothing amazing, but nothing to scoff at, either. Beer's body is a dark brown color with hints of orange; light brings out a burnt orange mixed with brown hue. While the body is hazy due to the suspended yeast, a medium intensity level of carbonation is visible along the sides of the glass.

Aroma is very yeasty, somewhat less bready, and has mild hints of nutmeg/clove-like phenols. Generally quite bland, though not offensive; just below average.

Front of palate is mostly of grain flavors, malt sweetness, and a bit of wheat tang. Mid-palate reminds me of yeasty whole wheat bread dough with a hint of spicy phenols. Back of palate is possibly the most complex part of the tasting, with modest banana esters, whole wheat bread, yeast and some grain. Aftertaste is fairly bland, with some lingering wheat tanginess and yeast flavors.

Beer is medium-bodied with medium to medium-high levels of carbonation that are complementary for the style. The result is a slightly fizzy at first, then smoothed-out and foamy mouthfeel. Closes dryly, with a bit of tartness and very minor stickiness across the palate.

Best before 10/11/12 - poured from a swing-top 500mL bottle into my Ayinger weizen glass.

Dark chocolate body with faint sandy brown highlights capped by a voluminous creamy yet rocky fist of pale wheat foam. Superior retention, dense sticky solid lacing.

Stewed bananas, dark fruit, and a touch of malt and wheat in the nose. Yeast is prominent (and gently phenolic) without being domineering.

Spicier on the palate than in the nose, with cinnamon and clove coming forward along with other subtler yeast notes. No bitterness, though just tangy enough from yeast to offset the baseline sweetness. Nearly toasty, slightly peppery, with an almost earthy medium-sweet finish. Some bubblegum and bread notes throughout.

Especially creamy, full, and lightly effervescent mouthfeel.

One of the deeper malt flavors I've encountered in the style - a pleasing variant really...finish is maybe a tiny bit sweet and the purity of the other flavors is not as keen compared to the very best examples - still well worth trying.

I've never seen it before in the states. This dunkelweiss comes in a 500 ml swingtop, hs a best before date of 10/11/12, and you can "Leikeim" on Facebook. Kidding on the last part. On to the beer:

Having seen some chunks at the bottom of the bottle, so the bottles was poured very slowly to keep the chunks in the ottle. The color is leather brown with hues of ruby orange towards the bottom. A huge billowy head sits on top, slowly droping but still remaining thick. There's a decent aroma, one with subtle fruits, spiced apple being the most obvious. Some baked bread pulls through, adding another layer of aroma.

Tastes weak. Watery spiced fruit, some banana bread, light, flatish mouthfeel. Maybe the beer is getting there in age, even though it's 4 months before the sell-by date. Or maybe this is how the beer is supposed to taste. Whichever it is, I'm not wild about it.

I picked up a swing-top from EuroMarket for $3.50. Best by 10/11/2012. It poured a dark amber, but it's not that different from the regular weisse. The aroma has a big bready, creamy clove character that carries over through the flavor. There's very little fruit, maybe just a slight touch of orange. The body is medium and normal for the style and it goes down smooth. There's no real "dunkle" here, just a decent hefeweizen with darker barley.
