This Imperial Stout was brewed with our favorite top shelf ingredients. British base malt, rolled oats, malted oats and a whole lot of toasty brown sugar are liquified into this luscious treat. After that, we sourced some freshly dumped maple syrup casks which previously held Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon, filled them to the brim, and waited. Nostalgic winter memories emanate in each warming gulp for jolts of joy during the dark days of Winter.

On tap at the source.

So big with loads of licorice, anise and mild roast, oatmeal, vanilla and caramel, working nicely with the maple syrup. Barrel character has additional oxidation pairing well with the licorice, adding a real aged dimension. Mild coconut. Lovely, big body with big flavors - brown sugar, licorice, anise, a deep base malt character that somehow balances the sweetness from the sugar and maple syrup. The oatmeal adds a rich silken feel. Rich maple syrup, warming bourbon, coconut.

Appearance: After a battle with one of the thickest layers of waxing I have encountered, the beer pours a very dark brown with a slight film that fades quickly; leggy but no lacing

Smell: Chocolate fudge, brown sugar and maple syrup tones, all ensconced by a touch of Bourbon barrel

Taste: Sweetened chocolate fudge with brown sugar and maple flavors building; through the middle, the Pappy Bourbon barrel adds a touch of magic that lingers into the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied and creamy with no carbonation

Overall: My first beer from Ruse and I am quite impressed

Traditional stout look, almost no head, which is a shame based on how it smells.
Scent is maple heavy, chocolate, and a hint of the Pappy advertised.
Taste is exquisite. A near perfect balance of not-overdone sweetness, maple, and roasty deliciousness.
Mouthfeel is great with very little effervescence, and a small touch of boozy burn.
A very unexpected find, that I almost missed. I’d put this beer up there with the greats from New England that I’m familiar with - not toppling my all-time reigning champ of Treehouse Moment of Clarity (Oreo), BUT hat tip to the brilliance behind this beer and the crew that made it.
