16-ounce can purchased at John's Marketplace. Date stamp reads "05/03/23". Poured in a bulbous John's-branded pint glass.
Look:
Translucent yellow-gold, capped with a tall head of fluffy white foam. Decent retention. The foam coats the inside of the glass and leaves shapes like a map of another world.
Smell:
Brightly phenolic and spicy. Ripe banana, warm bread, orange blossom honey, coriander, a hint of freshly ground pepper. Gentle sweetness rounds things out.
Taste:
Spicy! Cloves lead the way on top of a base of soft, chewy, bready goodness. Unobtrusive sweetness follows, along with notes of candied orange slices, orange zest, coriander, peppercorns, and banana bread. The spices leave the tongue tingling, and fade like echoes on the long, malty, orange-scented finish.
Feel:
Medium-light-bodied with frothy, finely-textured carbonation. Spices leave a mellow warmth.
Overall:
Ruse is perhaps best known for their excellent IPAs, but I am happy to find that they make a hell of a witbier too. Dead Magic is chewy, spicy, and satisfying. Perhaps a bit hearty for a summer quencher, but pretty awesome after a bike ride on a bright and breezy PNW spring afternoon.
