In the competitive striving to get near the top echelons of the RIS category, it takes more than time and talent. In a cold climate, the RIS is also comfort food. And it had better be genuine, because the ratings will not be fooled. (I should point out that 90% of the time I am below the average for a particular RIS.)
But when you find an excellent RIS at the end of summer day as your nightcap after tasting a dozen sundries before (I was at the Kenosha Border War Beer Fest), then you will be as lucky as I.
R'Bunch of Misfits is very smooth and the alcohol (16.1 ABV !) is well concealed; both not easy from a young brewer.
Looks seem the standard pitch, viscous. Smells do not seem to need the barrel-aging that the competition boasts. But a young RIS does not need that complex melding of whiskeys and cocoa and vanilla and oak. And R'Bunch does just fine in the Taste; simpler appreciation of the brewer's skill than made by rich and complex aging. Smooth and soft in the finish , R'Bunch sent me off for the restorative train ride home.
R'Noggin is two Kenosha brothers who setup shop three years ago where I-94 exits to Kenosha. But their passion has brought something to what were mere cornfields in the last century. R'Noggin hopefully makes the highway settlement more than it is.
