Small batch #1: PTA Bake Sale Blueberry Saison
Our very first small batch bottle release! Brewed with our house yeast blend, “Nightmare Fuel”, this beer fermented for 5 weeks with local, organic blueberries and just a touch of vanilla. We then primed it with freshly-squeezed Meyer lemon juice to bottle condition for bright effervescence. The result is a beautifully balanced, lightly tart beer with layer-upon-layer of complexity. Delicate notes of hibiscus, angel food cake, and citrus zest. Light floral funk, mixed berries, pomegranate seed, and a lovely, vanilla dry finish.
Get one quick, we only made 99 of them, and this is a one-time brew!

Pours a pinkish/purple, similar to a dark rosé wine. The head forms one half inch of fine, subtle, pinkish/purple foam that lasts a few minutes. The chill haze is a few shades off of clear, while random patches of lace form islands on a PBGC Sauvin glass. The beer's color becomes more like cherry apple red as it warms.
The aroma opens with a strong sense of boysenberry and fermented blueberries. Tart sourness adds nice, spicy notes, followed by ginger, oak, and honey. This is all reminiscent of a light, fruity wine. Warmth reveals raspberries and cherries.
The flavor is markedly different from the aroma. This is very odd. While at first off-putting, it grows as an interesting and enjoyable sensation. The beer is not sour, tart, bitter, or sweet, yet all of that is combined in a single, sharp taste. There are a lot of undifferentiated berries, as well as yeast effects. The finish is strong and slow to fade, carrying the oddness along for the ride. Warmth clearly reveals wild blueberries and perhaps even graham crackers.
The watery texture works well with a light to medium body. Alcohol seems slightly less than expected. This beer is effervescent, with mild astringency.
PTA Bake Sale is an interesting and unusual take on the Farmhouse style. While I easily finished the bottle, and this style has a wide range of character, the effects of this one seemed to stretch the style definition. This was definitely worthy, however, I am hard pressed to think it would ever be in anyone's regular line-up.
