A pint can purchased at the brewery on 12/08/18 as part of the two Level 3 barrel aged beers released. Poured in the free Level 3 anniversary can glass for the review.
Look- Pours a medium thick oily dark cola brown. A small finger of light brown foam is left with no lacing present.
Smell- Cherry juice, bourbon, dark roasted malt, brown sugar, molasses and char.
Taste- Slightly tart cocktail cherries, bourbon, tobacco and very prominent oak tannins in the finish.
Feel- Slightly thin and slick with a very dry finish for a Russian Imperial stout. Perhaps it's from the heavy oak presence?
Overall- This is my first barrel aged beer from them and it doesn't disappoint. A nice barrel aged liquid cherry dessert that delivers a nice blend of fruit and bourbon. The oak in the finish gets a little strong midway through the glass. While not enough to ruin the experience, it did keep my score down a bit. Perhaps worth aging 6-12 months to see how it may develop?
