Big malt and hop flavors give this spiced barley wine a slight earthy flavor with a distinct bitterness found in your traditional American barley wines. The addition of cinnamon and other spices to the brew balance the strong barley wine flavors with a subtle spiciness that also makes Liquid Layers a perfect choice for the season.
We aged our Liquid Layers Spiced Barleywine in four different spirit barrels for nine months to create four barrel-aged variants. The 2019 variants included a Rye, Bourbon, Rum and Pumpkin Whiskey. The 2018 variants included a Rye, Bourbon, Maple-Bourbon and Port Wine. This is a very limited release beer in our In the Spirit Barrel-Aged Series that will be on tap in the tap room for a short time.

This, the 2018 rye barrel aged version.
Deep auburn & chestnut, transitioning to a caramel and dark orange hue, at the outer edge of glass. Aromas of bourbon, toffee, allspice and caramel, in the lesser degree. Thick, semi-malty and sweet, with a good amount of bourbon, with no barrel bite. Some spiced toffee and medium toast, caramelized malt. Finishes with the bourbon, then toffee and a touch of the toasted barrel. No real woodiness, nor barrel harshness here. Really good as a slow sipper, as expected, slow sipping, that is.

Had this on tap at the brewery. I was looking forward to this one but I have to say that the spice kind of dominated the other flavors. There was cinnamon and clove that were too present and did not let the other flavors come through. To me this one did not hit the mark.

Pours a clear, garet/amber-brown colour. Smells spicey, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, etc. and sweet caramel malts. Tastes like it smells, sweet caramel matls, cinnamon-heavy, and heavier.
