This was another beer that I traded for a while ago but couldn't quite remember when, as there wasn't anything written on the bottom of the can. First beer that I ever had from Gunwhale and like this description on the can, this was an interesting mix of a West Coast IPA and a European Farmhouse Ale. A bit more oil and funk would have made this stand out but as it was, this was an enjoyable American IPA that wasn't quite like anything else that I've had before.
More European than American in the pour, the cloudy, golden hue wasn't dank like something out of New England as it retained a decent amount of brightness to it. Plenty of head topped it off but that quickly settled as there was only a few scattered splotches of lacing left behind. Some piney hops, farmhouse funk, yeast, and lychee in the nose as the taste combined all of those in a pleasing and smooth way, as the end result was a marriage of two distinct styles. Somewhat dry, lightly carbonated, and mildly spicy, this grew on me as it warmed but was still a slow sipper despite the low amount of alcohol that was present.
The malt was quite basic and the aftertaste was quite funky both in the literal and playful sense, as the earthy undertone of this beer fully emerged once it warmed up. Really enjoyed this and how different it was although it was pretty unassuming the entire way through. Would love to have a few more of Gunwhale's offerings just to see if this would be true for those as well!
