Poured into a wide mouth, grip shaped goblet: color is straw gold, slight haziness, head is off white with fine bubbles that presents a quick 1/4 inch, head dissipates to thin top and ring on glass sides.
Smell is off for hefeweizen but not out of place for an aged wheat beer - slight yeast and then sour note with a lactic acidic note.
Taste is similar to aroma with a wheat beer sourness that has some slight spice, yeast, and sour finish with a lactic acidic quality.
Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation, moderate sweetness, prominent sourness.
Overall an odd beer as I think it's intended to be a more classic hefeweizen but comes through as a sour wheat similar to a hefe/berliner weisse blend.

Sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can poured into my weizen glass. No date stamp on the can or label. The beer can opens with quite a pop and even with a gentle pour I only get about 2 oz into the glass and it fills completely with foam. Not a great start. The foam is frothy and bleached white and leaves windowpane lattice on the glass. The foam does subside and the second half of the can gets into the glass more easily. Several fine, very active streams of carbonation rise to the surface of the beer. The beer is clear golden hue and only the slightest amount of haziness.
Aroma is a little bit of grainy , biscuity malt and then some wheat twanginess and hints of clove. I do get some hints of a band-aid phenolic note as well. meh, strike two. Overall a pretty mild nose.
First sip reveals a light body with very fine and prickly carbonation. Smooth texture and the beer drinks pretty easy.
Flavor is some grainy malt and wheat twang with sweet cloves and some fruitiness, maybe a sweet pear. Never any hints of hop character and the off scents dont materialize in the flavor. Its a decent beer, but seems to have some flaws too. Id pass if given the option again.

Taster at brewery. Pale straw color, wispy head, good retention. Aroma is weizen yeast, banana, bubblegum. Spot on. Taste trails off a bit, and the body is a bit thin but a pretty good try at this style

Desperate Times Brewery "German Weizen"
on tap at the brewery on 8 September 2018
Notes: Clear golden body beneath a short head of bright white foam that's really not enough for the style. The aroma is phenolic with plastic and clove and banana. The flavor follows with a sweetish malt base, some additional fruitiness in the form of mild apple and pear, a limited bitterness, and some tartness that helps to balance it. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp - again, it needs some more carbonation for the style.
