473 mL can, day 5 of the 2022 Toronto Brewing beer advent calendar; dated Nov 7 2022 and served barely chilled.
Pours a turbid, hazy apricot-yellow colour, crowned with over two fingers of fluffy, foamy, sparkling white head. It leaves behind a beautiful coat of delicate lace as it is reduced to a creamy collar and sudsy cap - looks fantastic to me. Mildly spicy and piney on the nose, with hints of grapefruit, gooseberry and mango.
Similar flavours carry over into the first sip - grapefruit in particular, but I'm also getting hints of mango and melon, backed by a soft, bready-grain sweetness. It finishes with citrus pith, grapefruit zest and spicy, piney hop bitterness that quickly dissipates in time for a dry aftertaste. Medium in body, with firm carbonation that prickles the palate assertively, adding a crisp bite to this brew's smooth, pillowy mouthfeel. Good drinkability, but maybe a little bloaty from the carb.
Final Grade: 3.81, a B+. Rouge River's Quiet Stars is a quality New England pale ale, boasting decent hop flavours, light-to-moderate bitterness and a crisp, dry finish that continually left my palate begging to be quenched with another sip. I wouldn't say I'm wild about this brew, but it was still a pleasure to try - kinda too strong to really qualify as a session option, but two of these in a row wouldn't be out of the question. Thumbs up.
