Appearance: Poured with a meager half finger of head that did not stick around nor lace. The body is a beautiful deep crimson/brown that shows mild carbonation.
Smell: A mix of toffee and doughy malt with a slight almost strawberry note to it. Potentcy is decent and didn't need warming to come out.
Taste: Tastes like it will put hair on your chest, starts with toffee and doughy malt that doesn't get too sweet before a brief berry note hits with a slight touch of caramel before a perfect earth and noble hop note with an odd hint of cocoa.
Mouthfeel: The carbonation isn't there, but I could see if it has more presence it would become too aggressive for this beer. The transistioning is good, with a bit of a valley in the middle, but that mixed aftertaste does a great job for this one.
Drinkability: I would call this just short of being medium-heavy in terms of body which gives it a nice thick but not to thick where you are restraining yourself part. Settles down well with a big and bold taste for a Marzen. It's like then took the entire range of the style (for good or ill) and jammed it into this beer.
Final Thoughts: This is an Oktoberfest beer that I could see being part of a drinking competition. Just heavy enough where you would seek endurance, but still light enough to put back. Irrespective of that fact though, it's still a solid drinker that I'd be happy to have again. Maybe just boost the carbonation slightly somehow.
