Crowler, canned a week ago. Generally not a fan of this style, but it was a gift.
An aggressive pour only gives a lackluster finger of white head into my nitro glass. Considering the noticeable fizzing, head retention wasn't too bad. Body is a dark brownish orange, crystal clear, with a lowish amount of bubbles coming up. Lacing looks like it will be sub par, but we'll see. Overall it looks ok, but not great so far.
At first glance the nose smelled very fresh an inviting, it's come back down to earth and is more moderate and not quite as potent in a glass that doesn't trap the aroma as well. Still, not a bad aroma, german malts are the forefront. Slightly flowery, some faint fruity notes. Noticeably sweet, hopefully it's a good fermentation on the flavor. Not getting much in the way of hops at all. It actually smells quite nice, just wish the nose was bigger, but again that’s probably largely the glass.
Flavor is very well attenuated. Malt flavors are waaay less apparent than on the nose, I don't personally mind this because my biggest gripe with this style is that it is often too malty and sweet, but I understand that to be more to style, and therefore this is not. Still, I wont complain. Small floral notes. While the malts are very subdued, they linger in the background and provide a pretty creamy aura to the beer. Interesting flavor, it's very light and pretty simple, but I like it.
The mouthfeel is really the winner here though. Creamy and silky smooth. Carbonation is on the lower end and the body is pretty thin but does have character due to the creamy feel. Hop bite is little to non existent. Style wise this should have a bigger carbonation, but again, I like what's going on here more than the classic style, so I don't mind.
Drinkability is very high. There is maybe the smallest alcohol presence, but overall this is a very drinkable beer at 7.1%
Appearance turned out meh. I was not a fan of the head, and the lacing turned out very patchy.
Overall a nice beer. From what I can tell it's not 100% to style, but that might be a good thing here.
