Big coconut and caramel in the aroma. Flavors smack of mild toasted coconut, dark pitted fruit, brown sugar, chocolate covered cherries. golden raisins. Nice dose of alcohol warming on the finish.

Had on tap. Reddish brown murky pour with a tan ring. Aromas of dark fruit and coconut starring, mild yeast and more so sweet candi sugar and malts support. Taste is a more muted version of the nose, yeast is just not up to the task that the style demands. The feel is malt leaning, smooth, yet has some slight booze leakage in the middle, finishes with a coconut flair.

2019 rendition. Appropriately poured into a Chimay glass. I say "appropriately" because Chimay's Premiere is held as the standard among quads (and Chimay is several centuries old) while Lo Rez is only three years old and, yet, is ridiculously skilled and mature beyond its years.
Coconut Quad is another pleasant surprise from Lo Rez. It Looks average compared to the style, but its Smells are well above average, dark fruity. (The coconut rave is mild to me... perhaps it melds with the dark malts.) Tastes get fuller yet; but Coconut Quad still lack the yeastiness that the masters have. (But, I shouldn't expect world-class yeast from a 3 year old!) Finishes balanced; surprisingly without excess sweet. Feels full in the mouth, perhaps as full as many of the Trappist masters who really like the bubbles.
Only my 4th from Lo-Rez, it is too soon to make broad conclusions (particularly about a 3 year old.) But I will say this: they seem to make the strong Belgians well. After each ale I have from them, I tell myself that I should visit their taproom. Only now, the taproom is closed until we control corona. Once that is done, I promise a visit... so help me Chimay.
3/7/22 This vintage canned on 1/18/22 and bought from Beermiscuous. Obviously, no longer "retired." (I've notified BA.) Three years later, I've grown to 18 uniques @ Lo Rez; making me a fan. It is hard for me to proclaim any differences in the two releases three years apart. But I'm still impressed. I've edited the above and am counting over at UnTappd.
