To commemorate the legal drinking age, this is my 18th unique brew from Lo Rez and I'm going to draw Rascal's lineage back to my first Lo Rez brew 3& 1/2 years ago, a Scottish Ale now retired called 80 Column Wrap (I was the only reviewer, so don't look for anything better.) But I was most impressed how the malts were blended and the hops were moderate, consistent with the best of the style... pretty good for a two year old brewing in the Midwest. There also was a faint herbal tinge in there that allowed the hops to be moderate and the sweet malts to be countered by something other than hop resins.
I taste that here in Rascal, only more pronounced herbs... a sign of a quickly maturing micro that can use rye and a measly 5 IBU to make malt seem wondrously flavorful.
Because I like Lo Rez, I'll draw the lineage even further back to at least two Trappist darks that also inject secret herbs to achieve their distinctive after-taste. I taste herbs in Rascal something akin to Westvlereten... as long as I am not accused of blasphemy, in which case I recant now before the alter.
As for the mythical Delilah and, I presume, inspiration from the whiskey bar in Chicago... Well, I approach this by commenting on the very wide range of artwork on Lo Rez' cans; Rascal is on the seamier side. But mark my words, there will come a time when a more unified commercial look will sell more and you will discover that a lascivious Delilah does not get you past the ABC censors in Kansas. Just a thought as you continue to brew great ales.
